A large-scale police investigation is underway in the Dutch village of Overasselt after a violent shooting left one man dead and two police officers injured.

Dutch authorities have arrested dozens of people in connection with the incident, which happened during the early hours of September 1.

Police say a large group of masked and armed men were involved in the incident. When officers arrived at a property on Ewijkseweg, shots were fired, seriously injuring two police officers. A 51-year-old man from Wijchen, reportedly working as a security guard at the property, was killed.

🔴 WHAT HAPPENED?

The incident began at around 4:00 a.m. when police responded to reports of suspicious activity at a house in Overasselt.

According to Dutch police, officers arriving at the scene immediately came under fire.

A major manhunt followed, with arrests made at several locations in the Netherlands. Police also searched surrounding areas, including fields near Overasselt.

🚔 MASSIVE MANHUNT

The investigation quickly expanded beyond Overasselt.

Police arrested 34 people, with suspects reported to include Dutch, French, Belgian, Algerian, Libyan and Ukrainian nationals. Authorities later said 32 suspects were brought before a judge, while two were released.

Authorities stressed that investigators still need to establish the individual roles of the suspects.

At this stage, investigators have not established who actually fired the fatal shots.

🧪 FORENSIC INVESTIGATION

Following the shooting, specialist investigators examined the crime scene for weapons, ammunition, CCTV footage and other evidence.

Police subsequently carried out nine searches at locations across the Netherlands in an attempt to secure additional evidence and determine who organised or ordered the attack.
